This is an oil painting of my brother and my brothers shadow, the resulting representation is a fleshy mesh of chaos contained within the confides of a persons side profile on canvas. The shadow was used in this way, as a direct way to trace an object to connote the photographic studies used and often hidden in contemporary painting practice as well as it being a new way for me to try and represent someone. This interaction between drawing and photographic process connotes the relationship modern artists have with photographic references, specifically the authenticity of a drawing is explored. Traditional art still holds weight over our values, and drawing and painting are often regarded as having more skill applied to them, more time, and more beauty. Photographic practice has recently gained agency as skilful and beautiful, yet combining the two is time and time again viewed as derivative of the other, this leads many modern painters and drawers to conceal their use of a photo study or tracing. This is an area I find really intriguing and wished to explore with this work, it is as if efficiency is deemed as less authentic and less beautiful. This piece is also centred around the idea of photography, what is a photograph? I often play around with the fundamentals of photography in my practice, and this piece is indicative of that as I remove the use of a camera object, lens or photographic substance. How long does a photo have to exist for for it to be a photo? I saw my brothers shadow, it existed and then it didn#39;t, much like how analogue photographs change with time and how all objects change with time, they are finite, and the only consistence is the exchange of energy, entropy. This painting reflects my interpretation of this experience, of studying my brothers shadow, thinking of him as a person in my head and this concept of time and energy changing.
